Research: History of music videos

History of Music Videos

Modern day music has changed from traditional music videos as for the audience appeal, traditional music videos didn't consider about what ages they will segment their music video to where as modern day music videos consider why each video has a different audience.

Key dates in our history of music videos:

Year 1929 - Bessie Smith

Bessie smith appeared in a two - reel shot film called Saint Louis Blues, featuring a dramaisted performance of the hit song, there are many arguemnts about the song which some people say that this is not a msuic vdieos because its a intention was to promote the film. As, this clip is filmed while the film is being filmed at the same time, so in my opinion I do not think this is a music video because the artist doesn't have a connection with her audience for her to topmost her self in anyway. However, there are elements of a music video such as the artist is syncing to the song which is conventional element of a music video .

Year 1920 and 1940's - Disney

Many films were accompanied by moving images, especially animations. In 1940, Walt Disney released a musical called 'Fantasia,' it is an animated films around around famous pieces of classical music. Many people argued that the music the clip showed was a music video, I disagree with this because there is no type of artist being shown throughout the clip so it is hard for the audience to feel the connection between them and the video.

Year 1956 - Tony Bennett

Tony Bennett's' song 'A stranger in paradise,' is filmed walking in Hyde Park London. The single was distributed on us and UK TV, leading Bennett to claim he made the music video. I think that this song has a music video because the music video has a narrative, this allows the audience to understand what the artist is doing snd the audience may understand the relationship between the lyrics and visuals.

Year 1966 and 1968 - The Monkees

The Monkess was a TV show, each episode include  a specifically made film segment that was created to accompany their songs that was used in TV series. This was a advance for the Monkees because it promoted their song  and this allowed their audience to stay loyal which then their audience was eventually watching tenor TV show but the songs they filmed on their show, wasn't music videos.

Year 1966 - The Birth of of Top of the Pops

The importance of TOTP is to improve a sing that means that artists had to complete for air time as TOTP had a limit on the number of performance it shaved.

1967 - The Beatles using videos for better purposes

These type of videos have used filming techniques such as film effects, dramatic lighting, costume. This music video is a narrative based music video.

1975 - Queen

Queen's song 'Bohemian Rhapsody ' was created to replace a live performance on TV. The beatles had created videos however Queen was the first to create a video specifically for that song to be played on TV. This song was the first single to be created on 'video' format

1981 - MTV Launch and development of music videos

MTV launched in 1981, the first video to be aired is Buggies video killed the radio star. In the early 1980's artists started to use more sophisticated effects in their videos and added a story line  or plot to the music videos.

1984 - Thriller

Short films can be music video's because it has a begin, middle and end. Jackson's Thriller took the music video format to another level. This song has a clear narrative which is very entertaining because when I compare this music video to other videos over the past years, I am able to understand how technology has developed which has allowed this song with be captured very clearly. Michael's use of cinematography is the audience a different appeal towards the video a they feel more engaged and connected. The use of Mise-en-scene is developed in this video because the way the artist and the back up dancers are dressed shows the development of music videos over the past years. In 1984, most people said that these song had a music video because of the way the video has a narrative and it has promoted the
artist to become more successful.

1980's MTV and video development

MTV had bug stars such as Madonna, play her songs on MTV this allowed her to be aimed at a wider audience because in 1980, MTV was the biggest and most popular music company. In the 80's there was so many controversial music videos because there was many political issues back then.

I think that 'The Beatles' was the first band ti create a music video because their music video to controversial to the music videos we have today. It starts off with a unclear narrative leaving the audience confused.

How much has Music Videos changed over time?

Music videos have changed over time and the main reason for this is the audience appeal, as the years past more people start to know more about the different types of genres. Music video's today have are technological developed as there are better camera, green screens, different represents of the artist.

  • Development of technology - Before modern were produced,  there was little technology to use that allowed people to make music videos that was a low quality video and they wasn't professional allows which suggests that they didn't consider how the record the music video. However, music videos today are produced from high technology camera because the increase of technology such as editing and sound programmes have developed music videos because modern music videos are presented more professional, this also suggests that the artist has then payed a higher amount of money into the video.
  • Representations - For music videos today, artists are represented as stars because they are known to have a lavish lifestyle. In the past, there was more male artists then females sue to feminism not yet existing.
  • Music videos importance - The importance of music videos have decreased sue to the different media formats that allow people to listen and watch music videos. In the past, music videos were important because they presented the audience, and by producing music videos that was the only way for the artist to connect with her fans. In today's music videos, there isn't an importance because people download music videos legally on their devices such as there is an app called 'Itube' it allows people to download
  • Values - Artists had more value in the past about the music video they produced because they didn't want to give their audience a negative appeal. Where as, artist today do not value their music videos as they do not consider what can affect their audience. Such as Madonna is an artist that doesn't value her music videos as she causes controversial music videos.

Conclusion

It is very important to know the history of music videos because it has helped me to understand how modern music videos have developed over the past years. In addition to this, I have understood that the use of filming techniques have also changed as fair the better technology formats that have been developed. I think that music video should have a narrative because it will have a meaning for the audience and the audience will be able to find a common characteristic with the artist by the way she/ he is represented. Also in my opinion, I think that the first artist was Michael Jackson because his music video is narrate and performance based which is a conversational music video and the audience is able to understand what the artist is trying to get across.

  1. Gizem, a highly proficient post here, some important key dates highlighted in the music video history. Clear that over the last 7 decades you know some of the key events that occurred. Some personal opinion provided also on how you believe that music videos re now taking stance over the music itself.

    To improve;
-think about the 80's and why there were so many controversial music videos
-who would you argue made the first music video? Justify your reasons
