Evaluation: Question 3 - What have you learnt from your audience feedback?

Question 3 - What have you learnt from your audience feedback?

Questionnaire and graphs:
  • Genre: Hip-hop
  • Gender: My music video is targeted at both females and males, but my artist in the video is a male and the music genre relates to males.
  • Age: My music video is targeted at individuals aged 16-30 years old.
  • Ethnicity: My video is targeted at all ethnic groups.
  • Occupation: E1-D1. My audience is mainly teenagers that are studying or that have low paid jobs.
During the initial planning stages, I carried out a questionnaire asking 20 people the type of music they like to listen to and why, I created this questionnaire because it helped me to decide on which group of audience, I will be targeting my album at. Identifying our target audience before filming my music video, allowed us to be aware of what our target audience expect from the artist. I gave this questionnaire out to students that are above 16 years and below 30 years as I will be targeting at these age groups. I think that the age limit for my music video is realistic as Hip-hop is more relate-able to these ages.

From the feedback that we received for this question,  it helped us to understand how often our audience watch music videos, 10/20 people always watch music videos, 7/20 sometimes do and 3/20 never. This helped us to understand how we could increase the amount of people watching music videos, this also meant that we had to create a outstanding music video in order to increase the amount of people that watches music videos. A moajorrty of the people said that they always watch music videos, this means that Hip-hop artists are every successful with creating a attracting and interesting music video.

Most of our audience said that an Hip-hop artist is more likely to sing about youth. This feedback allowed us to think about how we will meet the audiences expectation, e.g. the way our artist will act which shows that he is presenting the youth. This question was very important as it helped me to understand how I could attract my target audience.

A majority of the audience agreed that the artist of the sing is the main focus in a music video. This meant that while filming we had to show the artist more then other characters, this is way we decided for the main artist to only pay in the music video because the artist will be able to only concentrate on him. This also meant that I have to use artists image which involved Goodwin's theory to step in. I think that receiving this feedback allowed me to create a conventional music video.

The feedback that I created from this question was vital towards the utilisation of our star image. Majoraty of our audience said that the artist should show that he is passionate in the music video, the therefore meant that it was important that the artist has a strong personality, in my music video the artist is shown in a meeting with his record label, this shows that he is passionate with his job and he enjoys produces new music.

How did this help you make decisions?

Receiving feedback from our audience has helped myself to know what makes a conventional music video, we identified each audience as we asked them open and closed questions, this therefore allowed audiences to pick from a range of answers. For example; one of our questions was, 'How often do you listen to Hip-Hop?' 12 out of 20 people listen to Hip-hop music, we also asked our candidates how old they candidates are. These two simple questions allowed us to know who we are targeting at and which type of people are more likely to listen to Hi-hop music. Some of our other questions asked candidates about their interests in music videos, the feedback we received for this type of question helped us to be awry of what type of things our audience likes and therefore they will be more likely to find interesting. Moreover, if we hadn't created this questionnaire then this will be an disadvantage for us as the we wouldn't have known what our audience likes about Hip-hop music videos and what they expect form the artist.

This feedback helped me to have a basic idea of what an Hip-hop audience excepts from the artsirt so when it came to the production I was sure the artist has meet the audiences expectations. If we didn't gather this feedback then I might create a music video that doesn't interest the audience as it doesn't interest them.
What is the importance of receiving critical feedback once the production has been made?
It was important that I received critical feedback once the production was filmed, conducting a focus group allowed me to understand what my target audience think about my music video and what they dislike about the video. AS film and media students was invited to the focus group, I also invited people who like my genre, this will allow me to clearly understand what they think about my video. It was important that we receive critical feedback when our proud action was completed, we organised a focus group. Inviting students that also study AS and A2 media/ film.

Doing this focus group it allowed us to have another chance to edit some shots that students thought that it had to be changed in order to look better and more professional. We did edit some scenes such as; we had a corridor scene with a white background and we received negative feedback about that as it didn't look professional and expensive. So, we deleted the corridor scene and added a car scene, the artist is shown lip syncing while sitting in the car. This looks more conventional to a Hip-hop music videos as most of the artists from this genre, show their super-cars in their music videos. this promotes their fame.

I invited people that like my genre, this helped me to know what they think about my music video. The information that I gathered from this focus group allowed me to think about how I could make my video better in order for it to be an outstanding music video. Receiving feedback allowed me to make final changes to my music video. The feedback that I received also allowed me to understand what my target think about it and it also allowed me to have a basic outline of what type of feedback I would receive from the public, once the
music video has been released.

Why did you put your work on youtube?

I decided to post my music video on Youtube because Youtube is a big video website that allows the public to share and like it very easily. Youtube is a global format used by a mass audience, so uploading my music video on Youtube I received viewings, and comments, my target audience also gave me feedback. I received positive and negative feedback from my audience as well as my target audience, this allowed me to understand what people think of my music video.

Why did you put your work on Facebook and Instagram?

I posted my music video on Instagram because it is a very common social media platform that my audience does use. My followers on Instagram are able to like, share and comment on my music video which means that my music video will be able to be view publicly. I also posted my music dive on Facebook as I wanted to share it to my friends and family as I believe that they will make more realistic comments on the video.

Some comments I received on Facebook and Instagram:

Positive
  • 'Great use of editing techniques.'
  • 'I like the way the ratio is pictured on a magazine cover at the end of the video.'
Negative
  • 'The lip sync was off during some scenes.'
  • 'The narrative was not clear.'

What did you learn from this audience feedback in terms of whether you created a conventional and successful music video?

From the feedback that we received I learnt that a majority of my audience liked my music video as I received positive feedback. I learnt that my music video was conventional as made sure that I use my audiences feedback as a guide to create a conventional music video.

Conclusion

Overall, I think that my music video was successfully promoted on various media platforms; Facebook, Instagram and Facebook as they are all publicly accessible and globally popular. I uploaded my music video onto Youtube as I feel that this media platform allows people o like, comment and share my video. The feedback that I received from media platforms allowed me to make changes which increased the success of the music video, the feedback that was given to my music video was mostly positive although some people did they say it wasn't as good as they thought it will be. This is why the focus group activity helped us to make final changes.

Research and planning: Drafts for Advert

Advert

To make sure we created a conventional advert that appealed to our intended target audience, it was important that we created drafts of our work and receive feedback on them. Receiving feedback on our drafts allowed us to analyse and review our use of conventions, what worked and what didn’t. Below are the drafts that my group and I created.

Draft 1:

The positive criticism we got were:

- Image of the diamonds are good
- Ideas compliment each other well

The constructive criticism we got were:

-         Album name/ artist name
-         Key information missing
-         Artist image

-         Does not compliment digipak

Draft 2:

The positive criticism we got were:

- Typography more consistent and relevant to artist/genre
- Colour scheme works & compliments digipak

- Key information present

The constructive criticism we got were:

- Not enough gold in typography
- Song outlines are too faint

- All space has not been used

Draft 3:

The positive criticism we got were:

- Key information stand out
- all space used
The constructive criticism we got were:

- artist image

From the drafting process we have received critical opinions from a person experienced in media which fine-tuned our connotations to genre characteristics, mise en scene and theory.

Conclusion:
To make sure we created a conventional advert that appealed to our intended target audience, it was important that we created drafts of our work and feedback on them. We created two in total and this process allowed us to analyse and review our use of conventions, what worked and what didn’t. Below are the drafts that my group and I created.
